Sangre De Muerdago – ‘Noite’

Deep in the woods of Galicia there is a place where goblins live. It’s true, although no one has seen them. These goblins make music, music that can show us what (or where) the truth we are looking for is. Of course I’m talking about a Pablo C. Ursusson’s project: Sangre De Muerdago.
In their latest CD with the title ‘Noite‘ (means “Night”) we hear their familiar sound, their haunted melodies, with the escort of sad but optimistic vocals. As in all their records so far, you can see how vocals and music become one, but still you can see their uniqueness.
For me, ‘Noite‘ is a record that takes human feelings and transforms them into music. In these 12 songs, you can see your life in a way you had never seen before. You can see you’re hiding secrets, but above all, you can see your truth. You can feel yourself travelling towards you. Of course S.D.M. doesn’t claim that we might like the truth, they claim that the journey will be interesting. And this journey is!
From the first song ‘Medianoite‘ we start to float into this ‘Noite‘.  The opener is an instrumental song, a prologue to all the best things (tracks) to come.
This is just the start of this inner trip, a trip to the dark forest or to the dark corners of our own selves. Even in their previous records I had this same feeling. I knew that, even back then, their music was to me something like magic, or mystery stories from a forest somewhere in the world, or …close to home.
The second song ‘Xuramento‘ could easily speak for a lost love, a love that we’ll never forget, even if that love was only in our mind and never in our reality.
But as life has its brightest moments, so does ‘Noite‘. Songs like ‘Roubando o Viño do Fauno‘, ‘Lume de Solsticio‘ and ‘Mariñeiros‘ with their powerful music take us to a place where intense colors and the bright sun prevail. All these tracks are instrumental, but we can add the lyrics we like as we stand in this sunny place.
In the rest of the tracks, we see their familiar ritual folk, this atmospheric feeling which is produced by sad violas and flutes (amongst others), the exotic sound of the guitar with the soft sound of harp and the vocals of the forest fairies singing their chants.
The last track of the album (‘O Amor‘) is an epic close, where vocals and music stand as one in the beginning of the track, just to leave later vocals have their place in the music, just to leave us with bittersweet feelings, but full of hope.
Of course I understand S.D.M. music is something subjective, but —at the end of the day— what is music? Music is the sound of us, of what we are, of what we ever wanted to be. Comparing this album with their previous full-length ‘O Camiño das Mans Valeiras‘, I can see that their journey continues. We don’t know when it’s going to end; we only know that we can let ourselves join them, because life after all is a fairytale, a S.D.M. fairytale of goblins in a dark forest somewhere.

  1. Khruangbin – ‘Evan Finds The Third Room
A beautiful band from Houston, Texas, Khruangbin (stands for ‘engine fly’), that “We found the happiest lady in China. We told her that you don’t need a real hula hoop to have fun. She agreed” (Josh King, one of the director trio), resulting in one of the most feel-good music videos in years. You can find ‘Evan Finds The Third Room‘ from their latest album ‘Con Todo El Mundo‘.

  1. Sangre De Muerdago – ‘A Danza das Ánimas
This song is a music fairy-tale. It’s been sang not from an elf, but from a band called Sangre De Muerdago.  S.D.M. music is for dreamers, for those who have “eyes in their heart”, for those who live in this planet but in their own way. Their upcoming album ‘Noite‘  maybe is their best work to date. It will be released on April 20th.

  1. Varathron – ‘Into The Absurd’
Varathron, one of the most significant black metal acts in Greece which along with Rotting Christ and Necromantia form the “Unholy Trinity” of Greek black metal, have a long history since 1988. Although, Stefan Necroabyssious is the only remaining original member, the band has managed to grow its reputation. On April  27th Varathron release their sixth album ‘Patriarchs Of Evil‘ via Agonia Records.

  1. PRODUCT – ‘Holographic Rebirth
Off of the newly released 10-track album ‘Smoke Cloud Hologram‘, Connecticut-based rapper, PRODUCT’s ‘Holographic Rebirth‘ is just over two minutes of throbbing beats and crashing vocals. ‘Rebirth’ melds together the industrial, rap, and electronic worlds in a way that’s reminiscent of Moor Mother or Dedekind Cut. Featuring a stomping outro that brings to mind a robotic giant’s footsteps, the track is one of the standouts of the LP.

  1. Jo Passed – ‘Millennial Trash Blues
The indie rock band Jo Passed from Vancouver shared a new video for ‘Millenial Trash Blues‘ of their upcoming debut album ‘Their Prime‘. The album is out on 25th May via one of our favorites record labels Sup Pop. Their music doesn’t lack of experimentation featuring some cool genre-mixing like punk, neo-psychedelia and noise. The cult video that is directed by Justin Gradin is the perfect visualization of their new track. Enjoy!

Man Is The Animal

From the beginning of his life, man (as in human) is helpless. He needs his parents to feed him, change his diapers, teach him how to walk, teach him how to speak.
Later on, he needs his teachers to give him knowledge and, when he finishes school, he needs someone to give him a job.
And then man has a baby. Now he is feeding it, changing his diapers and so on. Later on, teachers will teach him and, after that, someone will give him a job so he can perpetuate the circle of life (at least life as we “know” it).
The irony in this process is that man’s nature is to be independent, to be free to do whatever he wishes with his life. This is a rule, the most important rule of all!
And -what a pity- this rule is a stranger to so many people! This rule is the meaning of our life, and we have made it meaningless. No one cares for their personal freedom; on the contrary, most of the people want to exercise power over their fellow humans.
Since we were babies, we have learnt to obey. We have learnt to obey our parents, do what our parents told us, or even like what parents told us we should like.
So, with a start like that, it is very difficult to wake up one day and change our life, change our beliefs.
It is not only our parents, but society as a whole that is made in a way that makes us a puppet. We have to eat, so we must pay for our food, but we must have a job to do that. It is a system that we do not like. Yet we have created it! No God told us to do it; the fault is ours!
So, where the heck did we lose our way? And the most important question: “Why did that happen?
The answer is very simple I’m afraid!
All this happened because (as I wrote before) man’s biggest need isn’t his freedom, but to captivate others! Did you ask yourself, what truly gives you more pleasure? Is it your ability to be free or the ability to control others? I know, many would choose the ability to be free, but (I believe) that, if they look deep into their selves, they will choose the ability to control others!
The explanation is that this is in our nature! We have primal instincts, we are animals after all. We like the taste of blood, and most of all, we like to see other people below us.
If someone says he is not like that, he lies. Only those who can win the battle within themselves can say that they are not animals or that they have killed the animal inside them. Judging from everyday experience, it is very difficult to find someone. Take a priest, a man who has dedicated his life to God. How difficult is to make him act like an animal? It is not so difficult, especially if your mind works faster than his.
But, why God said that we are like Him? Are we or not? Are we animals, or are we human beings? Or are we human beings after we kill the animal inside us?
I believe that we are human beings, but the animal inside us has its own life.
The animal inside us, some name it “Evil”, others name it “Power” and some name it “Human Nature”!
The animal inside us, is what make us what we are:  heartless entities who care only for “Power”. Heartless entities who only care to manipulate and control their peers.
Think about when was the last time that you helped someone. A stranger. Was it few days ago? Maybe a month ago? Or maybe …never?
Yes, man wants to be free. Man wants to make his life the way he wants, but, most of all, man is thirsty for blood! My blood, your blood, the blood of everyone else!
But why does man crave control?
Because he is weak! Because he cannot fight the beast inside him. Because that’s the way his parents and society taught him. Because having power over other people is what (he thinks) makes him… God.
This is how things are, and this is how things will be. We do kill. But not the beast living inside us. We kill the God who lives inside us.

Interview with Bauhaus’ co-founder & “Bauhaus – Undead” author Kevin Haskins

Good things happen by accident, or by choice. I’m sure that back in England, in the year of 1978 four young fellas (Murphy, Ash, Haskins and David J) could not imagine how important and pioneering the band they had formed  would be. The name of this group was Bauhaus…. Later on, a co-founder of the band, Kevin Haskins, presents in public his first book: “Bauhaus – Undead”. In this book, someone will learn things about Bauhaus he didn’t know, and all this from a member of them. I believe this source is by far the best. 
Hello Kevin, let me ask you a question that probably many people may share: What was the basic idea of writing a book about Bauhaus by you? 
I had no aspirations to write a book. A good friend of mine Matt Green who works at Cleopatra Recordssuggested the idea about three years ago. He knew that I had a big collection of Bauhaus ephemera and thought it should see the light of day. I thought it was a great idea and became excited at the thought of sharing my collection. Then off I went on a long journey of writing and working with Jeff AndersonDonny Phillips and Kaylee Carrington, who between them designed the layout and were a great motivating and creative force. I attempted to self publish it in October of 2016 but it’s didn’t work out and eventually I came back full circle to my friend Matt, who offered me a good publishing deal with Cleopatra. 
Reading your forthcoming book, what should someone accept about Bauhaus story? Do you believe that it will alter his/her “feelings” about the band, will learn stuff (s)he didn’t know, and why  should we buy it in the end of the day?
Well because I wrote all the stories, the reader is getting a first hand, fly on the wall, account from an original band member. I’m sure that in this way, the reader will learn information that they did not know. I also set out in part, to make this book a good natured celebration of the band. I don’t think it’s cool to air dirty laundry and share negative things that should be kept between the band members. So I hope that the reader will learn more about the more humorous and positive aspects of the band. 
The period the book is referring, is it in the years that you were member of Bauhaus or even later on? 
I have been a member of Bauhaus from day one and will always be. Bauhaus cannot exist without all four original members, so there is no ‘later on”? The period of the book begins right at the beginning in 1978 and I end it in 2005 when we played the Coachella festival. In honor of our legacy and in the nature of the book, it ends on a high note.

Bauhaus was a pioneering band back then, and also a band that didn’t change its music style. Was that because you were focusing on the music that you played, or was it because those days it was difficult for a band to target on the money factor?
There was no plan of action other than to show up in a rehearsal room and see what happens! The music was created in a very organic way. I think that the only restrictions we placed on it was to be as minimal as possible and we decided to wear black, other than that it simply just happened. So the music came first.
How do you feel then as a member of Bauhaus, and what is left now after all these years?
I feel very proud of our legacy and astonished at how influential we have been. When I think back to when we first started, we had no idea what lay ahead of us and how we ended up, almost thirty years later, playing go 110,000 people at Coachella. What a journey!
After so many years, what is the relationship with the other members of Bauhaus? Are they better or not?
Pretty much the same.
They say that what is done, it is done, but if you could go back in time, as a member of the band is there anything that you regret, or something that you should do then but you didn’t?
When we disbanded Bauhaus after just four albums, at the time I personally wanted the band to continue. Had we been able to….. what would have happened?! There would have probably been no Tones On Tail album and Love And Rockets wouldn’t have existed. So I’m very grateful for having been in all these great bands and count myself lucky everyday. So I wouldn’t change anything.
Name a Bauhaus’ song which mostly represents your ‘phase’ you were then, and one for your current phase.
This is an interesting question that I’ve never been asked before! I would pick ‘Double Dare‘ for the ‘phase’ that I was in back then. Full of youthful angst and rebellion! For now I choose, ‘All We Ever Wanted Was Everything‘. If there was a song to go alongside the book, this would be it. Although it represents our childhoods, and what it was like growing up in more innocents times, for me it’s also about the band. A beautiful reflective song.
Does the book have a Bauhaus aesthetics (from the movement!) or is it just a ‘plain’ one design-wise?
I gave the layout artist, Donny Phillips, one piece of direction. I told him that I want it to be quite austere, like a high art book. So that everything presented speaks for itself without the distractions of design. In this way, because it’s very minimal, I feel that it reflects the Bauhaus aesthetic. I loved the colors he chose and I couldn’t be happier with the end result.
After Bauhaus, you and Daniel Ash formed Tones On Tail, and later with David J. you formed Love And Rockets. What was the difference between these later groups from Bauhaus, and which period was your favourite
Tones On Tail were more experimental and less confined. I feel more eclectic than the other bands and there was more freedom. Love And Rockets was more conventional to a degree and in general had a lighter aspect. Obviously it turned out to be more commercial. The trading of vocals between Daniel and David gave it a unique character.
As with all three bands, there was never a master plan of “lets do this and lets do that” it just happened.
As this is your first attempt as an author, may I ask what others writers do you admire or furthermore what is your favourite book?
Well when I was writing I referred to books that I had recently read by Peter Hook and John Lydon. What I realized was, was that they each used their own natural “voices”. There was no pretense, so I took that to heart. Writers that come to mind are Iain BanksNick Hornby, and recently I loved “All The Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr

So, did you keep notes from the period (not as a secret detective of course!) you were a member of the band or was it something you clearly remembered writing “Bauhaus-Undead”?
I did not keep any notes and was concerned about recalling all the moments. I found though that once I began writing about a certain story, that all the details came flooding back. 
Apart from the book are there any other projects in mind for the time being? If so, could you please give us more details?
Aside from the book I am playing in a new band called Poptone. It consists of me, Daniel Ash (founding member of Bauhaus, Tones On Tail, Love And Rockets) and my wonderful daughter, Diva Dompe. It’s a career retrospective and we are playing music from all three bands. Last year we toured North America and hope to visit other parts of the world this year. We have an LP soon to be released on Cleopatra Records.
